Guildford
is the County of Surrey (England, UK).
As
with many towns Guildford has grown to merge with a number of local
villages that now form suburbs
with their own distinctive flavours.
It is a classic "gap town" situated in the notch where
the River Wey cuts through steep chalk hills that form the North
Downs.
London is only about 48 Km (30 miles) North East of the town.
The routes of both the main A3 radial road from London to Chichester
and the main
London to Portsmouth rail links made use of this gap and helped
ensure the towns importance. Many Guildford residents work in
London
or
use Guildford's good links with the countries major road system
to travel
throughout the southern half of the country on business. London's
Heathrow airport is reasonably easily reached by road or rail,
as is Gatwick
airport.
